Foreword
St. Joseph's Catholic High School believes that every child, regardless of gender, race, skill level or disability should be provided with experiences to develop attitudes and skills, which will enhance an individuals propensity towards participation in sporting and recreational activities.
The St. Joseph's program is designed to aid students in the enjoyment of physical activity through experiencing a wide variety of sports and recreational activities, at school and within the community, which develop basic skills. Provided with these opportunities, we believe students will grow to feel more confident in themselves in a variety of sporting and social settings.
Sport is an integral part of a student's overall development. The benefits of sport include:
| • Development and maintenance of fitness |
| • Development of social skills through interaction with peers, staff and members of the community |
| • Improved self-esteem |
| • Constructive use of leisure time |
| • Provide an opportunity for competition at both a standard and elite level |
• Provides an appreciation and enjoyment of various physical activities
|
St. Joseph's Catholic High School believes that sport education is an integral part of the total development of the whole person and stands alongside other curriculum areas provided at the school.
Aims
• To promote the principles of Christianity and good sportspersonship |
| • To emulate the school motto “Act Justly” within a sporting environment |
| • To provide an environment where all students feel safe and secure and are treated with respect |
| • To provide students with equal opportunities to participate in competitive environments appropriate to their skill level |
• To improve the quality and variety of sporting and recreational activities available to students |
| • To encourage participation and skill development in a variety of sports and recreational activities |
• To emphasize participation, cooperation, enjoyment and satisfaction from competition |
Rationale
Sport and recreation provides an opportunity for individuals to develop spiritually, physically, socially mentally and emotionally. Participation in sport and recreational activities promotes:
• Physical development and body awareness |
• Aids in the acquisition of motor skills and movement |
• Provides the opportunity for the development of personal and social skills |
In addressing these areas, sport and recreational activities provide a means for the student to develop a positive self-concept and improved self-confidence. Enjoyable and positive experiences in sport and recreational activities whilst at school provide a foundation for life - long participation in sport and recreational pursuits.
Sport and recreation provides the opportunity for the development of a spirit of co-operation between and among groups of individuals.

Overview
The Sports Program at St Joseph’s reflects the needs and interests of the students. The program has evolved with the development of the school and as a result of consultation with the school community.
St Joseph’s sports program focuses on all levels of ability and interests and attempts to cater for the individuals needs. The school is able to offer and present sport and recreation through four pathways:
• School Carnivals |
• School Representative Sport |
• Recreational Sports for years 9 & 10 |
• Integrated Sport for Years 7 & 8 |
Sports Carnivals
Each year St. Joseph's Catholic High School conducts three (3) carnivals; attendance at Cross-Country & Athletics is compulsory for both staff and students except the Swimming Carnival which is for all students in Years 7, 8 and 12 and competitors only in Years 9, 10 and 11. All Carnivals are held on school days and generally commence at 9.00 am and conclude at 3.30 p.m.
The carnivals are as follows:
| • Swimming - held at Albion Park Pool |
Term 1 |
| • Cross Country - held a Croome Road |
Term 1 |
| • Athletics - held at Croome Road |
Term 2 |
Competition for the Swimming, Cross Country & Athletics carnivals is based on Inter House competition. The school’s population is divided into six (6) houses of equal number, based on alphabetical order. Each house has a designated patron, a staff member, and two (2) house captains, male and female. The houses are used to inspire a sense of community and school spirit amongst the students. The names and colours of the houses are listed below:
| • Kembla |
Red |
| • Keira |
White |
| • Warrigal |
Yellow |
| • Murphy |
Green |
| • Marshall |
Blue |
| • Macquarie |
Purple |
From these Carnivals the school selects representative teams to compete at Diocesan Competition, providing a pathway to State representation.

School Representative Sport
The school offers the opportunity for students to represent St. Joseph’s through Diocesan, State and National competitions. These sports include:
| • AFL |
• Hockey |
• Softball |
| • Baseball |
• Netball |
• Tennis |
| • Basketball |
• Rowing |
• Touch Football |
| • Cricket |
• Rugby League |
• Triathlon |
| • Golf |
• Rugby Union |
• Volleyball |
| • Gymnastics |
• Soccer |
• Waterpolo |
Competition and Trial games are organized as per the Diocese of Wollongong Sports Councils Secondary Sports Journal.
Team selection and training are organized at the discretion of the manager or coach with training being available before or after school or during the lunch break.
State Knockout Competitions
The school participates in numerous State and N.S.W.C.C.C. and invitational competitions providing the opportunity for teams to compete against a variety of school sides throughout the State and at a level beyond regional sporting competitions.
Year 7 & 8 Integrated Sport
Year 7 & 8 sport is integrated with the Year 7 & 8 PDHPE program. It is designed and implemented in this way to compliment the skills developed by students in their practical PDHPE classes. Students in Year 8 are also provided with the opportunity to experience recreational activities available within the community in order for students to make more informed choices for Year 9 recreational sport.
Students from years 7-10 participate in sport on alternate Fridays.
Year 9 & 10 Recreational Sport
The recreational sports program provides the opportunity for students to participate in a variety of leisure activities. The location of the school and the area from which the school population is drawn sets limitations on the availability of various recreational activities. Transportation time, cost and availability are all taken into account when providing with their choices each term.
